The 4TH MIQFF - Opening Ceremony Recap

The 4th Macao International Queer Film Festival opened at Emperor Cinemas Lisboeta Macau last Friday, where audiences from Macao and neighbouring regions gathered to mark the annual celebration of queer cinema. This year’s opening film is the latest work by acclaimed Hong Kong director Philip Yung, Cyclone, with the director and the core crew members in attendance for a post-screening talk with the audience. Cyclone had its world premiere earlier this year at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, before returning to Hong Kong for its Asian premiere.

Festival Director Jay Sun said in his opening remarks: “Every year at this moment, I am reminded of the early days when the festival first began. The inaugural edition was created with extremely limited resources. All we had was our passion for queer cinema and a simple belief that queer stories deserve to be seen.” He noted that although the festival has grown over the years and gained increasing support from partners and audiences, its original intention remains unchanged. He also expressed hope that audiences would find resonance in this year’s programme and encounter new perspectives and connections.

After the screening, director Philip Yung, actor Liu Yuqiao, and writer and intimacy coordinator Annabelle Kayee Li shared their creative journey with our moderator Joyce Yang and the audience. Speaking about the key theme of “imagination” in the film, Annabelle said that imagination may not directly solve real-world problems, but when people can use imagination to transcend fear, they begin to truly possess dignity. She believes imagination allows people to see other possibilities and gives them the courage to face themselves.

Director Philip Yung noted that Cyclone is not centred on a single identity, but rather on how a person gradually comes to understand themselves through their body and lived experience. He emphasised that the film is not intended to provide answers, but to raise questions. Actor Liu Yuqiao also shared that what moved her most about the character was the strength to keep moving forward despite doubt, rejection, and pain. At the end of the discussion, Annabelle left a question that resonated throughout the audience: “Why does it take courage to be true to yourself?” Perhaps Cyclone is not only about an individual story, but about a universal experience we may all face at different stages of life—how to understand ourselves, accept ourselves, and ultimately become ourselves freely.

Our sincere thanks once again to the Cyclone team, and to all audiences for their support and participation. The festival is still ongoing, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the cinema for more screenings and encounters.
